More or less open forest in moist, sandy soils that are often poorly drained.
Origin/distribution, remarks:
Native to west and southwest Africa. Now naturalised in many other tropical regions. E. guinensis is the main source of palm oil; others are: Elaeis oleifera and Attalea maripa.
