On ruderal places which are not too dry, like road sides, rubble, field edges. A. tomentosum prefers nutrient-rich and alkaline, preferably calcareous, more or less humus-rich soils.

Native to Eurasia from Spain to Xinjiang Province in western China. It is also widely naturalized in parts of North America.
