Habitat:Basic soils on calcareous substrates; moist soil types and commonly limited by temperature and so not found at the higher colder altitudes in much of Europe. In the Netherlands it occurs often together with beech and oak.
Flowering time:Spring: April, May
Origin/distribution, remarks:Native throughout mainland Europe, east to the Caucasus and Alborz mountains. Widely cultivated in New Zealand and in scattered locales in the United States and Canada.
